The CommonClass project started as a basic idea written in one night during Fall 2005, and in 2007, remains the same, hasty, and written in one night way. But the differentiating factor is the length of that one night. The 2005 build took 4 hours to build, while this one took a 15-hour coding marathon. Therefore, this year's build is 3.75 times better. Obviously, iteration is key.
CommonClass.com is a tool used for students to see with whom they share classes. Equipped with a school schedule and the desire to make school slightly more interesting, students login to the site, submit their schedules, and instantly see who they share classes with. It's that simple.
Or is it?
For the past two iterations, the site was written entirely in PHP. Although it is a robust language, this year's code is written entirely in Ruby on Rails. This is the ideal platform for this kind of project. Rails comes with instant Create-Read-Update-Delete (CRUD), which is a feature that takes a bit longer to develop in PHP.
The CommonClass team also analyzed the optimal marketing position as well as ways to monetize off of the site: Facebook flyers and Google AdSense. Welcome to Web 2.0.
